OBJECTIVES

Logging & opening up the route

One of the main objectives of the expedition was to professionally log the route by using Global Positioning Systems (GPS’s).  In addition, the entire route was analysed, mapped, and recorded.  Information regarding the conditions, logistics, wildlife, scenery, and terrain has been documented and in addition, the environmental situation of the lake was assessed.  This is to aid further expeditions to the area, thus encouraging tourism within Malawi, hopefully opening up the route to future expeditions.  The locals as well as other adventurers will benefit from this.  Open Africa is a charitable organisation that intends on further opening up sustainable community tourism routes from Cape Town to Cairo, and we will be in contact with this organisation to ensure this.  The information gathered will also be available to the Sea Kayak Society of South Africa.  This will in a way be providing a comprehensive guide to kayaking Lake Malawi.

Training and interaction with the locals

Throughout the trip, much of our success will depended on the local people of Malawi.  In giving something back to them, we interacted with the locals at a personal level.  We will be introduced and taught basic kayaking skills to those interested along the way, thus encouraging the development of kayaking on the lake, and possibly extracting potential kayakers with future talent.  We also learnt a lot in return from the locals themselves as well.

Film and media production

Rob Dyer, a crew member, is a professional cinematographer with extensive knowledge and experience.  He completed the Mozambique coast paddle, and his work was documented on 50/50.  The trip was documented by professional, high-quality photographs, and video-footage.  The information gathered will also be used in the logging of the route, and Rob is currently producing a professionally edited and produced DVD/Video to encourage others.  The DVD/Video will take two perspectives into consideration – the team dynamics and experience of the trip, as well as the environmental situation of Lake Malawi.  Rob, along with his producer, Don Guy, are currently negotiating with various broadcasting agencies to air the footage on national television.

Personal challenge

For each paddler, the challenge of the trip was be enormous.  We were tested on a physical and mental level, requiring huge endurance and dedication.  Completing the trip was a truly unique accomplishment, and will remain with us forever.  The rewards not only came in finishing the task, but also in what we were able to give back to the people of Malawi.
