VALUABLE TIPS

Maps and guide books

The Lonely planet guide book on Malawi is excellent, and will provide both the traveller and paddlers with invaluable information.  It is highly recommend to not leave home without this book.

Lanseria Airport produces an excellent aeronautical map of the lake, and it is more than sufficient.

Training

When paddling during June/July it is highly recommend that paddlers become comfortable running with large swell.  The SE wind known as the Mwera is prevalent during this period of the year and produces large swells that can make paddling difficult.

Police and authorities

The Malawian authorities are generally very hospitable to foreign travellers, yet there are circumstances when they can be unreasonable, and it is recommend to simply be patient and abide by the rules when one is conformant with such issues.

Lake information

The guys at Kayak Africa and Danfourth yachting, whom are based in Cape Maclear can provide the kayaker with invaluable information on the lake.  Please see Pg 12 for contact details.

Communication

You will be able to get cell phone reception in most parts of the lake.  One can purchase a local sim card, and use the “pay as you go” system.  VHF radio is also recommended to be used between boats.
