Nyasa: Malawi Kayak Expedition 2005

CONQUERED – 10 days ahead of schedule!

The Nyasa Malawi Kayak expedition crew has just become the first team to successfully paddle the entire length of the west coast of Lake Malawi, carving their names into history.  The crew composed of 7 students, and one intrepid camera man, decided that during their June/July vacation they would seek out an adventure of a lifetime.  Our epic journey took us from Mangochi (Malawi) to Matema (Tanzania) in the North covering 750km in only 33days, 10 days ahead of schedule.  This massive feat entailed nine months of back breaking preparation and training, however this proved to be only the first of many hurdles to come.

Throughout the 750km journey, the team had to dodge hippos, crocodiles, massive swarms of lake flies, water-spouts and explosive three meter cresting swells.  The dangers and hardships were however equally matched by the lakes marvellous untouched beauty.  The expedition proved to be a fabulous trip of lifetime, and the experiences and lifelong stories shall remain with the crew forever.

One of the main objectives of the expedition was to professionally log the route by using Global Positioning Systems (GPS’s).  In addition, the entire route is being analyzed, mapped, and recorded.  This is to aid further expeditions to the area, thus encouraging tourism within Malawi.
